A reinterpretation of a traditional rural courtyard house, this villa is located on a hillside near Jinan in the Chinese province of Shandong. The villa looks inward whilst taking advantage of the sloping topography to open up towards the surrounding natural landscape.
The courtyard’s undulating form guides and organizes the circulation spaces of the two-story building, distributing each room and offering glimpses of both nature and the sky whilst also bringing natural light within. Made of modest materials and with a simple exterior geometry, the villa blends into the rural context whilst expanding on motifs and forms from the local vernacular.
